Editorial Reviews - From School Library Journal

Gr 2-4–A mix of pests and beneficial organisms is profiled in these colorful introductions to common invertebrates. In each title, short blocks of text, arranged in a series of spreads, describe the outstanding characteristics shared by all the subject animals; distinctive physical and behavioral characteristics of particular groups and/or species; typical diets and feeding methods; life cycles; natural enemies and defense mechanisms; and ways the animals affect humans. A clear, color close-up photo (occasionally two) of a representative species accompanies the text on every page. Each title also includes a simple anatomical diagram. Extended captions and one or two sidebars in each section offer additional facts about the featured animals. While the brief texts are clearly written, the amount of detail on any topic is limited. Still, the titles do a good job of covering the basics.
